Wallace State Experiences Historic Success with Four First-Year Coaches Leading the Charge in 2024-25

HANCEVILLE, Ala. — Wallace State Community College embraced a new era of leadership across its athletic programs, with four new head coaches stepping into prominent roles for the 2024–25 academic year. While each brings a unique background and approach, Faron Key (men's basketball), Joseph Simmons (women's basketball), Sallie Burch (softball), and Kayland Wilson (men's golf) all share a deep-rooted connection to Alabama athletics and a shared goal of continuing Wallace State's tradition of excellence.
Faron Key: Coming Home to Lead the Lions
Faron Key's return to Wallace State as head men's basketball coach feels more like a homecoming than a new beginning. A former Lion himself, Key played at Wallace State in the mid-1990s before going on to a decorated career as a high school head coach. His most recent stop was at Hartselle High School, where he became the winningest coach in program history.
Hired in May 2024, Key wasted no time getting to work, quickly building rapport with players and instilling a fast-paced, disciplined style of play. His leadership paid immediate dividends, guiding the Lions to a 26-6 record with an Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) Championship and a berth in the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in his first season. The team's late-season surge and strong postseason performance proved that Key's transition to college coaching was seamless and impactful.
"This isn't just a job," Key said at his introductory press conference. "This is where I became a better player and a better man. Now I get to help others do the same."
Joseph Simmons: Reigniting the Lady Lions
On the women's side, Joseph Simmons returned to Wallace State with a track record of success and a strong connection to the school. Simmons previously served as an assistant for the men's basketball program from 2006 to 2010, helping lead the team to multiple conference titles and national tournament appearances.
Taking over the Lady Lions in 2024, Simmons brought renewed energy and structure to a program with a proud history. In his debut season, he guided Wallace State to a 29-5 record and the ACCC Tournament title, its first since 2011. He also led the team to the NJCAA National Tournament second round. His emphasis on defense, tempo, and team culture quickly turned the program into a contender once again.
"It's about building something sustainable," Simmons said. "Wallace State has the talent, resources, and community support to be a national power in women's basketball again."
Sallie Burch: From Champion Player to Head Coach
When Wallace State named Sallie Burch its new softball head coach in June 2024, the program got more than a proven leader; it got one of its own. Burch played for Wallace State from 2007–08, helping lead the Lions to a national championship. She went on to play at Jacksonville State University and later built her coaching resume at both the high school and collegiate levels.
Burch takes over a program rich in tradition but seeking stability after multiple coaching changes in recent years. She led the Lions to a 52-15 record, the regular season ACCC Championship, and a berth in the NJCAA Softball World Series, where they finished third.
"Wallace State changed my life as a player," Burch said. "Now, I want to give that same opportunity to the next generation of Lions."
Kayland Wilson: Swinging Into the Future
Rounding out the group of new faces is Kayland Wilson, who took the reins of the Wallace State men's golf program in 2024. A former college golfer and seasoned instructor, Wilson brings a blend of competitive experience and player development expertise to the program.
Her arrival comes as Wallace State golf looks to reclaim its position among the elite in Alabama and NJCAA competition. Wilson emphasizes fundamentals, mental toughness, and consistent course management, all traits she hopes will define the next generation of Lions golfers.
She led the Lions to the NJCAA Men's Golf National Tournament, where they finished in the top 20 teams.
"Golf is a game of discipline and resilience," Wilson said. "Those values align perfectly with what Wallace State represents."
A Unified Vision
With four new head coaches leading programs with championship legacies, Wallace State experienced a rare moment of transition, but not one of uncertainty. Instead, the college doubled down and hired leaders with local ties, institutional knowledge, and a hunger to win.
Athletic Director Paul Bailey noted, "Each of these coaches understands the Wallace State culture. They know what it means to wear the Lions uniform, whether as a player, assistant, or community leader. They're not just coaching teams, they're shaping the future of our athletic tradition."
As the 2025 season unfolded, one thing was clear: The Lions' pride is stronger than ever. And under the guidance of Key, Simmons, Burch, and Wilson, Wallace State's best days may still be ahead.
