Wallace State Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Northwest-Shoals

After winning six out of their last seven games, the Wallace State Lions hosted the Northwest-Shoals Patriots from Muscle Shoals. Wallace State fell in the first matchup 0-1, then won the second game 6-1.

The Lions are now 21-11 overall, with a conference record of 9-5. The Patriots left with a 19-13 record.

GM 1: Northwest-Shoals 1, Wallace State 0

Luke Fernandez pitched the whole game for the Lions. He threw K's left and right, totaling 10 strikeouts on the day.

The only run scored in this pitcher's duel occurred in the top of the first inning when Ryan Strachan grounded out to second base as Sam Robertson scampered home for the Patriots.

Jamie Howze finished 2-for-3 from the plate, leading Wallace State in hits. Cooper Sanford, Andrew Lawrence, and Austin Nix got a hit each in the matchup for the Lions.

GM 2: Wallace State 6, Northwest-Shoals 1 

Northwest-Shoals would strike first in game two in the third inning, similar to their lone run in game one. Robinson scored from third base off of a groundout to second.

Runs would remain hard to come by for both teams until the bottom of the eighth inning, when the Lions would bust the game wide open, exploding for six runs.

Sanford was the first to reach home for Wallace State, scoring on an error. Howze ran to home plate as Colten Payton singled on a hard grounder that got through the infield. Carson Heaps would fly out to center field, but Payton would tag up from third to get home. Lawrence sprinted to the plate on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 4-1. Connor Hensley would hit a two-run bomb to right field to add the cherry on top of the inning.

Cole Molina started on the mound for the Lions, pitching six innings and throwing seven strikeouts. Druw Smith would take over next, throwing 21 pitches over the next inning and third. Cody Lee would close out the game, earning the save.
